Code of Conduct

It is the responsibility of the Melville Dance Association to provide an environment for all students, parent volunteers and teachers that is free from violence, intimidation and abuse.

Dance is a discipline, and respect for teachers, for fellow dancers and for oneself is a vital part of the discipline.

All students, parents, Board members, and employees involved with the Melville Dance Association shall conform to the following Code of Conduct:

  • Students are expected to show respect for their teachers and their fellow dancers.
  • Students are expected to participate in classes and performances in a disciplined and attentive manner (age, of course, will be taken into consideration).
  •  Students are expected to attend scheduled performances and appointments; in extenuating circumstances, if a student cannot attend, parents must contact the instructor.
  • There will be zero tolerance for physical, verbal, emotional, or mental abuse.
  • Parents are reminded that those serving on the Board and Committees of the Melville Dance Association are volunteering their time for the benefit of all students and are not willing to be the subject of the abuse of other parents.  Those who act in an abusive manner toward volunteers or employees will be subject to sanctions at the discretion of the Board.

Students are accountable to the instructor for their conduct and actions in the dance environment.  Behaviours not adhering to the Code of Conduct as listed above shall qualify as offences for the purposes of this Code of Conduct. The following steps will be taken for students not adhering to the code of conduct:

FIRST OFFENCE– The instructor will ask the student to sit out of the class and speak to the student about their behaviour.

SECOND OFFENCE – The instructor will ask the student to sit out of the class (within the room) and the instructor or Board will notify the parents/guardians, and the parents/guardians will be accountable for their child’s behaviour.

THIRD OFFENCE – A meeting will be scheduled between the instructor, a member of the Board, the student, and the student’s parents/guardians to determine a plan for moving forward.

FOURTH OFFENCE – the student will be dismissed from the discipline(s) where the offenses occurred and/or from the Melville Dance Association at the discretion of the Board and instructors for the remainder of the dance year.

Instructors will record any incidents in writing.
